PeCAN pie clarification

One of my favorite desserts for the holiday is Pecan Pie. For some reason many people struggle pronouncing the name correctly, usually saying "can" as "con". Of course, this is the wrong way to say it, so I am endeavoring to help those who are ignorant.

Very simply, how do you pronounce the name of the figure below?

That's right, it's TouCAN Sam, not TouCON Sam.

Therefore, it's PeCAN pie. Hopefully this settles the matter.

Well, young yankee dude, I went to three on-line dictionaries and all three had "pi-kahn" as the preferred pronunciation. I know you never stir the pot and ALWAYS admit when you are in error AND that you are not stubborn. BUT, for some reason I don't think that you will accept the preferred prounciation from Merriam Webster as proof. This is just a wild guess on my part.

You are so right! Kind of like Arkansas and Kansas, I don't get it!

So you're saying to stress the first syllable?

To quote Emeril, a "pee-can" is something a trucker carries with him. It's "Con", stress on the 2nd syllable. Your toucan comparison is, in a word, incorrect. That's like comparing "Roof" to "Hoof".

How's the deer season going?

Kind of like "dough" and "enough"?

Slight clarification there, Reverend. As a boy whose grandfather grows the blessed nut on his East Georgia farm, I can testify that it's properly pronounced PEE-kan.

I respectfully disagree with you. The picture you've put up for this post is not a, "toucan," "toucon," or any such bird. What you've posted here is a cartoon of an imaginary, "something-or-other." When was the last time you saw a real bird in the wild, or not, with hands?

From Tony's Facebook page:

Stacey AndersonHmmmm. And you are the expert on this - why??

Having a degree in Speech & Language (and a minor in Linguistics), I think I might trump you on this one. All it takes is a quick study of the word origin to determine that "pe-CAHN" was the original Americanized pronunciation (which is why this pronunciation is listed first in most dictionaries). Those crazy Southerners eventually gave their own spin to it (which is why some people today say "pe-CAN"). This incorrect pronunciation doesn't bother me as much as when people mess with the word stress or start changing the initial vowel ("PEE-can")... that REALLY drives me crazy!

I'd be happy to offer you some complimentary speech therapy services if you still need help figuring out the correct pronunciation...... See More

Hope you enjoyed your pie! :)
