World Champions

Unless you live under a rock, you know the Yankees have won their 27th World Championship.

I guess you and I had the same thing in mind I just posted on my blog as well.

Twenty-Seven, as in Twenty-Seven World Series Championships by the New York Yankees; Twenty-Seven Championships in Forty World Series a .675 winning percentage. From 1923 the Yankees 21st season till tonight 107th season, twenty-seven championships.

Now, I have explained to just about everyone in my lifetime the who, what, when, why and how I became a New York Yankees fan. I was in 5th grade, the year was 1977, the previous year the New York Yankees defeated the Kansas City Royals to become the American League Champions for the first time since 1964, but they were swept by the Cincinnati Reds in the 1976 World Series. So it was not that I was jumping on a bandwagon. I read a story about Lou Gehrig in my history book, and saw the movie Pride of the Yankees. I was hooked before the 1977 season ended, and unlike in 1976 where I rooted for the Royals (who by the way had the best record in baseball), that year I rooted for the Yankees and have taken heat for it ever since. The Yankees won the American League Champion Series and went on to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1977 World Series.

In 1978 the Yankees were 14 and 1/2 games behind the Boston Red Sox in July but came back strong to force a one game playoff or as Red Sox fans refer to it Bucky “F*******” Dent. The Yankees won the one game playoff and like they did in 1976 and 1977 defeated the Kansas City Royals for the third straight time and defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers for the second straight time.

1979 the Yankees were not in the playoffs.

1980 this time the Royals got revenge and swept the Yankees and oh did I never hear end of that.

1981 the Yankees went to the World Series but the Dodgers won it in six games.

It would take 14 years before the Yankees were in the playoffs again in 1995 but I never waffled I never wavered when someone asked who is your favorite team I stayed a Yankees fan.

The core four as they have been labeled, Jeter, Pettitte, Posada, and Rivera led the Yankees to seven World Series 1996,1997,1999,2000,2001,2003, and this year 2009. Of the seven the won five and in cased you missed the fifth was just hours ago as they defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in six games. Eleven World Series appearances under the ownership of George Steinbrenner, Seven World Series Championships, two under manager Billy Martin, four under Joe Torre, and now one under Joe Girardi who by the way played on the 1996,1997, and 1999 teams under manager Joe Torre.

For all those people out there who easily say well the Yankees bought another championship, in the 37 years since George Steinbrenner bought the club to win only seven championships leaves 30 years that the Yankees did not. The number 27 has eluded the Yankees for nine years but it has finally arrived and it’s good to be on top again. Congratulations to the 2009 World Series Champions the New York Yankees.
